Good Friends, Great Life!Lin Miao While I was in high school, I developed this habit of always watching people and how they responded to things. When I’m walking, when I’m talking, and when I’m eating, I love to watch people. I don’t know why I do it, but I think it’s just my curiosity of wanting to understand all of the various human characteristics. About two years ago, in one of my high school math classes, I met this unbelievably down to earth girl let’s call her Sarah, but she always seemed to be sad. Everyday when I had class with her, I would try to take a look at her when I can to observe and perhaps better understand why she seemed so sad. Later as I began to talk to her I soon found out why and I was shocked: she always gone out with the wrong guys and some of them raped her. I was in disbelief. I have so much respect for girls and when I find out that other guys mistreat girls I often get quite angry about it. However, in this case as I kept on talking with her, I couldn’t believe why she let things like this happen. She seemed so strong, so focused, so appreciative of life, but she let herself hang out with the wrong people. Life is a series of light and darkness. We all want to be in the sunshine, feeling the warmth, that great feeling when you’re out in the sunshine. At times cloudy storms tend to disrupt that light, making us feel uncomfortable and uneasy. However, we can always get back in the light; we can always push the darkness away: light and darkness cannot be in the same room. I have this quote hanging up in my room and I live it everyday: “you are who your friends are.” In my life I try to be around positive and successful people because that is who I am. I know that may sound selfish and egotistical, but you must set high standards for yourself. If you want to lead and achieve, you must receive the friends who fit your standards. Your standards are there to protect you and to guide you to success, don’t lower it for anyone or anything or you’ll regret it for the rest of your life. As for Sarah, I am truly sorry for her and the things that the guys have done to her, but she shouldn’t have been there in the first place. She shouldn’t continually be around the same negative people who may do those kind of things. She needs to understand the power of saying “no”. It’s not rude in life to sometime say no to the wrong people, it’s not rude at all. If you were driving down the highway and you noticed a road block, you wouldn’t try to run into it. You would go around it or move it aside. That’s the way you must be with your friends: life is short, you don’t have time for people that will bring you down or hinder your success. As Eminem said in his rap song “lose yourself”, you have one chance, one opportunity don’t blow it!

May 8th - 11th, 2000, my daughter and I traveled to Disney World in Orlando, Florida, because of a dream my daughter, Amanda, has to make a difference in this world. Amanda then a 6th grader entered McDonalds Millennium Dreamer contest and told them about her contributions to the humane society and her dream of making the world a better place for animals. Amandas dream is to help homeless pets find homes, and she makes this dream a reality by writing a newsletter and donating all her profits to the humane society. Her entry won her and a parent an all-expenses-paid trip to Disney World to meet with other Millennium Dreamers from all over the world. 2,000 kids were chosen in all--1,000 from the U.S., and 1,000 from 90 other countries. The kids accomplishments were recognized in an awards ceremony where Christopher Reeves and the CEO of McDonalds corporation were among the key note speakers. Each congratulated the kids on all they have done and encouraged them to continue their efforts, emphasizing the fact that their contributions are the key to our future. One of the most exciting parts of the trip was trading pins with the kids from other countries. Amanda came home with pins from Germany, South Africa, Israel, Korea, U.K., and Indonesia, just to name a few. The kids were given free passes to all the theme parks and treated to firework shows, parties, and lots of other entertainment. It was quite an event! Fun as well as inspirational. Teaching Kids the Value of Money My husband and I have a 12-year-old daughter who wanted to go to a winter retreat with her church youth group last year. Price of trip – $45. I told her Id talk to her dad about it. "HOW much is it" he asked, "didnt she just go somewhere with the youth group" "Yes," I replied, "and also to two friends birthday parties. Another one is coming up this weekend." We both agreed that was a lot of money for us to spend for our daughter to have fun with her friends. Is this the price you have to pay for higher education, or can you avoid college debt in the first place Gaining a Childs Trust My daughters and I went to the beach several weeks ago. They were having a blast playing in the freezing cold water as I tiptoed around the waves, trying to keep my feet from becoming frost bitten. Next to us in the water was a mother with her daughter who was no more than 18 months old. This woman was holding her frightened little girl hostage in the ocean as the bitter cold waves crashed into her and rushed back with a fierce undertow. The poor child was screaming and crying, begging to be rescued from the torture. Her mother thought this was amusing. She laughed at her baby’s fear and grinned at everyone around her. I was disgusted and horrified. I finally told the mother that I didn’t find the situation at all funny. I have no idea if my words had any impact. By then, my own kids had finally remembered they had nerve endings and were shivering uncontrollably, begging for the warmth of their dry towels and warm sweatshirts. We left the water’s edge and the sickening site of mother traumatizing baby. The Rep As a young girl, while growing up in Junior High, if you show that you are too eager to be with boys, or even a certain boy, you will, sooner or later, be seen as "desperate". Come High School, reputation becomes more important to girls than looks. Imagine if you have a bad hair day, your next day you can still shine. But if you get a bad rep one day, your entire year can suffer. At least thats the case in High School in Junior High your bad rep is forgotten the moment someone else becomes news. Making The Grade “Here--" I said, handing my mother my progress report as I walked into her room. I braced myself for the inevitably screaming I was sure to hear. "My teacher says you have to sign this." My mother looked at the card, then at me.
