Wedding Dresses - What To Wear
You have begun to plan your wedding and you want your wedding to be special and unique to your and your future spouse. There are traditions and superstitions that have grown around the wedding ceremony, the bride, and what the bride wears in particular. Let's take a look at some of them. Q. Does the color of the dress really matter? Most brides wear white to symbolize maidenhood. White also is the symbol of purity and virginity. Cream and Ivory are also acceptable colors and they carry the same symbolism as white. Q. Are there rhymes about wedding customs? There are several but let's look at just two of them. There is the well known 1. Something old, something new; Something borrowed, something new, and a six-pence in her shoe. This rhyme talks about different color wedding dresses and what they mean. 2. Married in white, you've chosen right. Married in blue, your love will always be true. Married in peaRl, you will live in a whirl. Married in brown, you will live in town. Married in red, you'll wish yourself dead. Married in yellow, ashamed of your fellow. Married in green, ashamed to be seen. Married in pink, your spirit will sink. Married in gray, you'll go far away. Q. What types of dresses are appropriate for different times of the day? A formal daytime wedding is when the bride wears a white, ivory or pastel colored floor length gown with a train and a long veil. For a formal evening wedding, the bride would wear the same type of dress as for the daytime formal but with more elaborate train and fabric. For a semiformal daytime wedding, the bride usually wears a white or pastel colored floor or tea length dress with an elbow length or shorter veil. For a semiformal evening wedding a more elaborate fabric and trim can be used but the dress and the veil is the same as for the semiformal daytime wedding. For an informal wedding the bride can wear a white or pastel colored floor or tea length dress. She could also wear a dressy suit. A short veil or a hat is optional. Q. Why does the garter get thrown by the groom? It was thought to be good luck to get a piece of the bride's clothing or flowers, you would receive good fortune. In the 14th century Europeans gathered around the bride to try to remove her garter for good luck. In order to get away the bride would throw her bouquet into the crowd. The groom removes her garter and tosses over his shoulder to the crowd. The single man who catches the garter gets the privilege of putting the garter on the single woman who caught the brides bouquet. Q. Do traditions exist in reference to the bride's shoes? One tradition said that the father of the bride would give the groom a pair of the bride's shoes to symbolize the passing of the responsibility of the care of the daughter to the groom. A bride puts a penny in her shoe to ensure that she and her husband will have good luck and wealth. Q. Why is it bad luck for a bride to wear pearls? An old superstition from Mexico says that the bride should not wear pearls on her wedding day because they are the tears she will cry during her marriage. Q. What is the Dorothy Bag? The Dorothy Bag was originally called the Dolly Bag and was carried by the bridesmaids. They were full of confetti to throw at the bride and groom after the ceremony. In more modern times however the bride carried the Dorothy Bag as a small purse with some personal effects. Most brides now carry the bag with a bridal handkerchief a penny or quarter and it is used to carry cards and money in, so they can use it on their honeymoon. Q. Why is it that the groom should not see the bride in her outfit before the ceremony? The groom should not see his bride before the wedding because it is believed to mean that the marriage is doomed. Years ago, marriages were arranged and the couple didn't set eyes on one another till after the wedding ceremony. It was after the ceremony that the veil was lifted and the groom and bride were able to kiss which is the symbol of a beginning of a physical relationship. The reasoning was that if the groom saw his bride before the wedding and didn't like her looks he might cancel the wedding. This had the potential of dividing two countries or regions because marriages were often between tribes or countries. Q. Why do some brides leave the last stitch undone until just before she is ready to leave for the wedding? This stems from the superstition that it is unlucky for a bride to wear her complete outfit before the big day. Some brides leave the last stitch undone to ensure good fortune. Q. Do I have to adhere to any of these traditions or superstitions? No of course you don't have to use them you can make your wedding your own. It might be interesting though to look at your cultural history and see what superstitions or traditions might be unique to your heritage. The Celtics have many superstitions and traditions surrounding weddings and brides in particular. The world's religions often have their own traditions, rites, or superstitions. If you and your future spouse have a different heritage it might be fun to see if you can use some from each of your cultures. This would make your wedding unique and probably fun. About the Author

A Call for International Marriage Laws I recently watched a CNN programme which centred on "kidnapped daughters" (from multicultural marriages) who were unwillingly given away in marriages in Islamic states by their fathers. Usually, the fathers were from these Islamic states. May it be a small gathering in a picturesque orchard, a grand ball in a gigantic castle or a funky wedding along the coastline, she wants it planned and tailored to her wishes. Planning your wedding would take time, effort and energy but it's worth it. For brides out there, here are some things you can't forget to look into. Is Conflict Healthy in Marriage? Today my three-year-old daughter told my husband that she wants to be married. When he asked her why, she replied, "Because you get to be nice to one another". Your Wedding Invitation?s in the (e)Mail: Pros and Cons of the Virtual Wedding Invitation From purchasing the garter to choosing the photographer, brides (and grooms!) are online and as the Internet's many advantages have begun to permeate most every aspect of wedding planning, a single question has been popping up more and more: can I use the Internet for my wedding invitations? As a wedding website designer I've answered numerous emails from brides asking if an email announcement to visit their wedding website can not just supplement their wedding invitation but actually replace it. It's an interesting idea, one with the potential to save a great deal of time and money. However, one big question remains. Is it acceptable? Considering the potential benefits, it's certainly a question worth asking, and some compelling arguments can be found on both sides. First, consider the many purposes of a wedding invitation. Most obvious is the intent that the recipient understands who is invited. Also important is the inclusion of maps and directions, RSVP information, reply cards and essential wedding details. Furthermore, the wedding invitation is an expression of the couple's personal style and can serve as a memento for friends and family to remember the event. Considering all these essential functions, the question, then, is whether the traditional wedding invitation can be replaced by a simple email invitation to visit the couple's site online. Certainly, a creative and informative wedding website can serve the majority of the purposes mentioned. In fact, wedding details might be more specific and useful on a website given the amount of space that can be afforded an entire page devoted to each subject. One can easily give details and links to important wedding locations, schedules, maps, etc. Also, if the bride and groom are able to create their own site or find a designer they like, they can certainly express their own unique style and theme on a wedding website. But what about the empty space in grandma's album just waiting for her granddaughter's wedding invitation? Here is where an online invitation falls short. One solution, however, could be to purchase or make a wedding CD with the website on it. Technologically hip grandparents can treasure this memento like they would a written invitation (even if it doesn't go well in an album). Still can't decide? Consider some of the pros and cons of the "virtual invitation": Pros: *Save money on wedding invitations (certainly the most compelling argument for many). The cost of an online invitation, including one designed by a reasonably priced professional, should be considerably less than sending written invitations for an average sized wedding when factoring in the cost of the printing, postage, and reply cards. *Save the time of selecting and sending written invitations, especially if you were going to have a wedding website anyway. *Make things a little easier for those guests who already do a great deal online. *Receive RSVP responses via email. *Include links to maps and directions. *Have wedding details laid out for guests to avoid the bother of answering the same questions over and over. *Include important links so guests can find the information they need on such things as local attractions, accommodations, and travel (particularly useful for destination weddings). Cons: *Compiling all of your guests' current email addresses can be a daunting task. *Not everyone is online. Unless you know for a fact that you can get your email invitation to everyone who should receive one, this is not a good option. You never want to offend family and friends when planning a wedding. *Etiquette, etiquette, etiquette. If etiquette is particularly important to you or the people who will be receiving your invitations, this is not the right choice for you. For those who are thinking the whole "virtual invitation" is too drastic a change I suggest a compromise. Many couples are finding that combining the modern with the traditional is the way to go until all their friends and family have caught on to the Internet. The couple's web address can be included in the traditional invitation so their guests can have two sources for wedding information. Also, written invitations can be sent with instructions to RSVP online thus saving the couple time and money for postage and reply cards (with just a slight bend in tradition). In the end, whether it's traditional, modern or modern-traditional, what matters most is that the bride and groom have the wedding they desire. The best advice I can give is don't worry too much about tradition and etiquette; rather, spend the time planning the wedding of your dreams and maybe make some traditions of your own along the way. copyright 2003 Tamara Baker and Celebrate Our Lives Wedding Websites Wedding Flowers The selection process of your wedding flowers will usually begin with a discussion of the Bride's bouquet. Bridal Shop Owner Reveals Insider Secrets Every Bride Should Know Your wedding is nine months away and you decide to start searching for your perfect gown. You walk into a bridal store and start talking to one of the salespeople. They ask you for your wedding date and you tell them. They immediately tell you that you will need nine months in order to special order your wedding gown. Is this true? In most cases, this is not true. The bridal shop is telling you that just so you will panic and place your order that day. This also helps them in stopping you from looking at other bridal shops. Don't ever be bullied into buying your wedding dress on any given day. You might have found the dress of your dreams but give yourself a little time to think about it. You are making a big purchase for a special day and you need to make sure that this is the dress. Even if it is one day make sure you really think about it. I have suggested to some girls to go eat some lunch, discuss it with family or friends and then come back to make your purchase. Once you buy your gown that is it. Most shops do not allow returns or money back especially on special orders. Once you put money down on a special order, the dress is yours.
