What Words Will They Chisel Into Your Tombstone?
One day you will inevitably die. A morbid statement, I know, but one that is true. I don't want to upset you so let me say this - hopefully that day will be a long, long way off. However, I have a question for you now. What words will they chisel into your tombstone? Oh I know, most people are cremated these days. What I am really saying here is this - when it is all over for you, what will you be remembered for? What about something like this? "Here lies Fred Nurk. He was born. He lived. He died." Not too impressive is it? You might ask: "What did Fred do all his life? Perhaps somebody in the mourning congregation might say a few words to explain the meaning of Fred's life. "Well, Fred never said much coz Fred hated criticism. And he didn't do much either coz he couldn't be bothered. He never married either coz he couldn't make a commitment. He didn't work either coz he never found anything worth doing. Shucks, I guess poor old Fred never did anything!" Why is it that some people achieve so much, while others achieve so little? This reminds me of a story I heard once where a poor man walked up to a very successful business man and asked: "What is the secret of your success? How do you get so much done?" The business man replied: "That is the answer." The poor man scratched his head to which the business man said: "I see you are having trouble with my answer but you mentioned the answer yourself in your question." Again the poor man scratched his head. The business man said: "I am successful because I get so much done." The poor man then asked: "How do you do so much?" The business man replied: "How do you do so little?" This sounds like Confucianism. But it shows that sometimes, if we are smart enough to ask the question, we are already in sight of the answer. The truth is ? some people wear out while other people rust out. What would you prefer? Motivation, education and action will set you on the path of success. Lack of motivation, ignorance and inaction are the traits responsible for the "Fred Nurks" of this world. Time is moving on. It will wait for nobody. There is no time like the present to start doing something worthwhile. If you are restless and feel it is time to do something with your life then I recommend some education for you ? not necessarily the education you get in a classroom, though that, too, is highly recommended. A good alternative is to take a trip to your local bookstore. Seek out a book called "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill (ISBN: 0-87980-163-8). There are many other similar books that you can select from but this is a very good one. The categories to look under are: Motivation If you ask the assistant you will get the help you need. Don't tiptoe through life like the Fred Nurks of this world. Make the inscription on your tombstone a magnificent one. Life and success are yours for the taking! We are moving rapidly through 2005, and you'll find previously intelligent and reasonable people struggling with trying to keep a 'resolution' that they made earlier in the year to push themselves to create change in a specific area of their lives. Setting Goals and Obtaining Results GOALS SHOULD BE QUANTIFIABLE: It should be possible to analyze every goal in terms of specific quantifiable objectives. Naturally, for certain tasks, measurement of objectives will be more difficult to attain; the key is to make every effort to reduce each goal to its most quantifiable form. For example, a customer service department might have the following general goals: 1. To increase output on customer acknowledgments. 2. To boost the number of customer telephone inquiries that are handled. 3. To distribute mail in a timely manner. As described, the above goals are completely immeasurable. It is almost certain that the manager's expectations will not be met. The solution: Quantify these goals in a realistic, feasible fashion that will also insure departmental productivity: 1. To type 10 customer acknowledgment letters per hour. 2. Handle a minimum of 15 telephone customer inquiries per each two hour shift. 3. Open, sort, and distribute all mail for the third floor before 10 a.m. each working day. When Expectations Are Not Clear! Vision Means Passion - Whats Yours? Interestingly, the word vision can be interchangeable with the word passion. The Promise: The Key to the Successful Achievement of Your Goals Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. Establish your priorities and go to work. - H. L. Hunt 5 Good Ways to Make Steady Progress on Your Goals & Projects 1. Schedule a specific time and day to work on the goal ? just as if it were an appointment. Don't just wait for "someday" to work on it. It will always get bumped by more urgent (but not necessarily more important) tasks unless you make it a priority. Carving out a specific time to work on the project will make sure it finds its way onto your to-do list. Do Your Goals Match Your Passions? Making sure our goals are properly aligned with our passions only makes sense. If you have the wish to move up the corporate ladder, start your own business, or just about any other worthwhile endeavor you're going to make things a lot easier on yourself if you're working on things that get you personally excited and make you feel alive when you're working on them (i.e. following your passions). Toss that one away?a poor quality picture that does not meet the ideal you had in mind when you took it. Scratch it up to experience. Maybe blame it on the camera. 21 Life Changing Questions You Cant Afford to Not Ask! Imagine finally taking off seven coats you've been wearing on top of each other for years and years. To some people it means driving a flash car and flashing wads of cash around to show they are doing well. To others it is spending time with their family, having achieved happiness in their life. The Importance Of Having A Goal In Life At the age of twenty two, I read a book that described the importance of having a goal in life. In the books example, a survey had been carried out at a school. Students who had just taken their GCSE'S were asked to answer various questions, one of which asked, "Where would you like to be in five years time?" |
