4 Barriers to Overcome For Growth
As we begin a new year, it's natural to reflect a bit on what we really want out of the next 12 months. Have you made some resolutions? Have you decided to get in shape? Go for a promotion? Quit smoking? Get your finances in order? Spend more time with your family? All of the above? Whatever your resolutions are, they all boil down to one thing- you want GROWTH! Congratulations! You've taken the first step towards seeing positive results. The material you'll find in the newsletter this year will help your growth journey be swifter and more fun. As 2005 kicks into high gear I thought it might be helpful to make you aware of four barriers that must be overcome to experience any kind of real growth. These are barriers that nearly everyone has naturally, and it takes conscious decision and effort to remove or compensate for them. 1. Unwillingness to accept full responsibility. This year and every year, your growth is up to you and you alone. Certainly you have resources and should get help in achieving your goals, but ultimately YOU will reap the harvest that YOU plant. Growth cannot occur until you commit to making it happen. 2. Unwillingness to take decisive action. All the knowledge in the world is useless until it is put into motion. Once you've decided to make your life better, make a plan and get going. Growth cannot occur until you start moving. 3. Unwillingness to look foolish. The pursuit of anything worthwhile will definitely require you to take some risks. You'll need to go beyond your comfort zone and in that process, you'll stumble, fall or look dumb at least once- it's almost guaranteed. The sooner you stop worrying about appearances, the sooner growth can begin. 4. Beginning with incorrect premises. Many of the things that we've come to believe about success, health and prosperity simply are not true. Some have never been true, and some used to be true but they aren't anymore. I could give literally dozens of examples of each category, and if you want to analyze some of yours give us a call for a complimentary coaching session. For now suffice it to say that growth cannot occur until you have an accurate view of the world. These barriers must be overcome if you want to grow and the good news is that you definitely can overcome them. Planting Seeds of Action Recently, I was driving past a local nursery and saw a sign that said, "Fall Is For Planting." As I drove, the idea on the sign was gnawing away at me. I asked myself, "what am I planting for fall?" What actions will I take now that will, with some love and nurturing, bring me a splendid and bountiful winter harvest? Do I have What It takes? What am I made of? Do I have what it takes? I want to succeed, can I do it? Nine Reasons To Embrace Failure I've always heard that "public speaking" is the number one most common fear. According to a recent survey I conducted in my e-newsletter, however, this is not the case. Overwhelmingly my readership chose "failure." Walk In The Light It was a mild October night, weeks after the horrific September 11 terrorists attacks on our nation. With a mix of anticipation and apprehension, my husband, children and I, entered the gates of the North Carolina state fair. The fair lights illuminated the sky as thousands of fair attendees attempted to escape into hours of fun and fantasy. While trying to temporarily remove the overshadowing fear that more tragedy may be imminent, the excessive police security constantly reminded us of our nation's tragic events. Your Life Story: Whatcha Gonna Do? Write Your Life Story NOW before Its Too Late! Imagine this scene: Project yourself into the future. You are 87 years old and sitting on the couch in the living room of your house. Sitting around you are your grand children and their children too. The smaller ones and maybe even some of the older ones ask you to tell them a story. They enjoy your stories. And of course you are more than happy to oblige them. Then after all, this is your family! Your offspring! You've told them many stories over the years. This time, however, they want you to tell them a different story. Commitment vs.Trying - Is Trying Lying? Today I heard the saying "Trying is lying!" Who Is The Inner Critic? The inner critic is that voice inside your head that tells you that you aren't good enough, smart enough, talented enough, pretty enough, or strong enough. It nags and natters at you to the point that your self confidence and sense of bravery is destroyed.
