What Being Vs Doing Really Means
So often we hear about "being" rather than "doing." Often it's given as advice when we are overwhelmed, overworked and overstressed. "You should just 'be.' You're doing too much." Well, yes, obviously, but what does that MEAN? How do we just be? I happen to think the people saying this don't even really know what it means and are just giving it as a platitude, trying to help, but it doesn't help if you don't know how to implement it. Here are some ways in which being is different from doing. Hearing vs. Listening If I really "hear" you, I understand what you're saying and, more importantly, what you're not saying. I grasp the full import of your words and silences. I'm not just listening with one ear. I'm really getting you. Learning vs. Studying I can study all day long, but if at the end of the day all I really know is what's going to be on the test, it doesn't do me much good. Learning is about absorbing what's being taught. Once I've learned something, I don't need to study it the next time. Coming to Believe vs. Deciding Decisions can be arrived at two ways-by coming to believe this is the right course, or by "deciding" this is the right course. You've heard the term "executive decision." Often that means I've just decided something without reference to any outside sources or even to what I really think. By coming to believe something, I've made an authentic, informed decision. Realizing vs. Jumping to Conclusions It's easy to "jump to conclusions" and just know something is true. Really knowing it's true, from a centered, authentic place in your heart and not just in your head, is more difficult. It's also the best way to reach the truth. Being Effective vs. Being Efficient Being effective means getting the right things done in the right way. Being efficient means getting the most things done in the least time. Obviously there is some advantage to getting things done in less time, but it's absolutely crucial that this should be done in the most EFFECTIVE way. As you can see, Being vs. Doing is actually about what you're doing and how you're doing it. Initially it might sound like just sitting around, but it's a very active process. Dont Just Hope - Decide! As the story goes, a single college-age guy went to the airport one day to pick up a friend. As he waited for his friend to come off the plane, he noticed a man hurrying through the crowd, calling to the woman and two children standing next to him. The woman and two children were calling to the man as well. The man rushed up to the woman, took her in his arms, looked into her eyes, said "It's been too long!" and gave her a big kiss. As he bent down to hug each of his children he said "I've missed your faces so much." Why are You Living? It was 4,O'Clock in the morning, my regular time to leave my bed and prepare myself for the day's activities. But today, it was special?some thoughts were troubling the peace of my find. Why are we living? What is the purpose of this life? For whom, I am living? For my parents, my spouse, my kids, my country, my religion, NO, I am and in that manner we all are living for ourselves. If today anything happens to me, will my spouse, my parents, my kids, stop living? No, they will not. Then, what is the purpose of living? Why are you living? You are living for yourself, your name, your growth, and your happiness. The purpose of this life is: "You in Particular and others in General". Say It Aint So For years, many of us heard the phrase "Knowledge is Power." We actively devoured books upon books to advance our knowledge in the hopes of gaining power. Some of us even adopted the attitude that I can learn anything from a book. Yes, knowledge is powerful, but knowledge alone will not advance you to that next level of success, whatever it is. Who Is The Inner Critic? The inner critic is that voice inside your head that tells you that you aren't good enough, smart enough, talented enough, pretty enough, or strong enough. It nags and natters at you to the point that your self confidence and sense of bravery is destroyed. You are convinced that the voice is correct and that you really don't have what it takes to live out your wildest dreams. As time goes on, you quit setting meaningful goals. You become resigned to a life of mediocrity and dullness. Our Future I'm back from Hawaii; it was ten days of physical and emotional mastery. We went from learning from twenty of the planets best speakers in their field, to being pushed physically with a fifty foot pole climb, and then, flying fifteen feet like a free bald eagle to a hanging trapeze. These were some of the most invigorating experiences of my life. Read All the Books All of the books that we will ever need to make us as rich, as healthy, as happy, as powerful, as sophisticated and as successful as we want to be have already been written. Nothing To Lose I stormed out of the office and headed for the patio area in front of my office building. It was October 2003, and everybody knew what happened. Ever since our division consolidated in February 2002, there had been more "closed door" conversations than ever, and when they involved me, I usually came out angry. This time I was madder than ever. I was sick of the office politics, sick of the cliques, sick of people sneaking around the rules ? and you can only take all of that being sick so long before you explode. After complaining to my supervisor for the umpteenth time about the state of affairs, we both cracked. I told her I was disappointed at the lack of morals and integrity, and she told me that I needed to just shut up and get professional help for depression if that's what it took to quit complaining. Here is the ironic part: I have a degree in psychology. Motivation: No Finish LInes There is a saying that goes something like "getting to the top is easy, the hard thing is staying there once you get there." Its Only Too Late If You Dont Start Living Now Remember when summer seemed to last forever? My mother use to say that some day we would realize just how fast time goes by. As usual, my mother was right. Success: Its Really Pretty Simple From the 'What You Need to Succeed' Series After the Big Project: Recovering From Success My older daughter got married 10 days ago. The wedding was a joyous and extraordinary experience, way beyond our imaginings. I am deeply happy about all of this, and feel strongly validated by the whole experience. Self Determination - Making the Most Out of You Breaking the mold of being a child is difficult. The mere addition of years does not make that happen. The dependency many adults choose, in fact, keeps them in a child-like mentality. If the doctor makes our health decisions, an accountant our financial ones, a minister our moral ones and a politician is left to decide our rights, how is that different from a child being told what to do by teachers and parents? The Time to Act Engaging in genuine discipline requires that you develop the ability to take action. You don't need to be hasty if it isn't required, but you don't want to lose much time either. Here's the time to act: when the idea is hot and the emotion is strong. Personal Motivation: Without Struggle There Is No Progress As each day ends and another begins, the words of Frederick Douglas ask us as individuals to recognize the relationships between life's daily struggles. Discover the Hidden Power of Self Motivation Many studies have been done to research the effects of motivation and mental health. As the implications of helping those with negative self-esteem, depression and anxiety are immense this is certainly an area of research that deserves a great deal of attention.
