How to Turn Down Invitations Gracefully
All of us occasionally receive social invitations that we don't want to accept. How do we handle turning down these invitations without hurting or insulting the person who invited us? If you are turning down an invitation, first be very clear in your own mind whether you are turning down the particular event, the person who issued the invitation, or both. Sometimes we would like to accept the invitation, but we have a previous commitment that conflicts with the timing of the event. Sometimes we want to attend the event to which we have been invited, but we don't want to go with the particular person who asked us. Sometimes we want to go out with that person, but we don't want to attend that particular event. If the only reason that you are turning down the invitation is because it conflicts with your schedule, make this very clear in your reply, and if it is feasible, suggest an alternative that works better for you. You can say something like, "Greg, I would love to see that new movie with you, but unfortunately, I'm already scheduled to do something else on the 29th. Would another evening next week work for you?" This reply makes it very clear to Greg that his invitation is appreciated and another date is being suggested instead. If Greg had simply received a "no" to his request, he would not know whether it was the time period that was being turned down, the activity, or himself. If you really want to go out with Greg, and you are available that particular evening, but you want to turn down the invitation because you don't want to see the movie he has selected, you can say, "I'd really love to go to a movie with you next Saturday, however, I don't like war movies. I prefer comedies. Is there another movie you would like to see with me that night, or perhaps on a different evening?" This reply makes it clear you don't like the particular movie selection, but everything else about the invitation is fine with you. What if you don't really want to go out with Greg because, although you like war movies, and you are available on the 29th, you don't want to go out with him? Most likely you don't want to hurt or insult him, but you also don't want to be pressured to go out with him. If you don't want to accept, you can simply say, "Thanks for the invitation but I'm already seeing someone," or, "Thank you but I'm not interested in going out at the present time". You do not need to explain yourself, or your reasons. If the other person starts to ask you badgering questions, or becomes abusive, be as polite as you wish, but leave immediately. Sometimes we receive ambiguous invitations when we aren't really clear whether the invitation is meant as a romantic date, or if the other person is simply suggesting a shared activity with you as a friend. In such a case, it's best to ask the other person outright. Although it can be embarrassing to ask the other person to clarify his or her intentions, it will be even more embarrassing if you make an assumption about the evening that turns out to be wrong. Sometimes we would accept the invitation if it meant that it was a romantic date, but we would turn it down if the other person only wanted to be "friends", and sometimes we are the one who only wants to be "friends" and we want to avoid a romantic entanglement. In such a case we need to know exactly what is being offered before we decide whether to accept the invitation or to turn it down. Three Qualities of a Good Relationship All relationships have some adjustment periods, but being hurt shouldn't be part of being in love. Loving relationships have good qualities, such as support from your partner, a willingness to communicate, a desire to compromise, and open an honest communication. When you do not have these fundamental qualities in a relationship, that relationship isn't likely to grow, and become something that you desire. After Retirement Separation - Life Just Gets Better! Life after retirement separation can be a very lonely one especially if you have no family of your own. You tend not to go out as often as you did when you were a couple. You may also have a complex that being older is harder and more difficult to meet new people. This may be so for many people but do not forget that are hundreds of people out there that are in the same situation as yourself. They too are lonely and without a partner after retirement separation. Whats The Attraction? Why do people have affairs? Why not do the 'right' thing and leave a marriage first if one is inclined to step out of it? The reasons are as varied as the people involved. Public perception of infidelity is someone with a sexual overdrive and their pants around their ankles, and while that may be true in some cases, it's not as common a reason as one would think. The following are just a few of the reasons for staying in a marriage and having extracurricular activities. The First Ninety Days A friend of mine recently commented on the amazing number of romance novels written and the huge amount of money being made in that industry. He then shared his observation that these romance novels don't usually tell their stories beyond the first ninety days or so. He said people just want to read about the romance of falling in love, not of the day-to-day life of being in long-term relationships. A Kiss is Never Just a Kiss! Men Arent The Only Stalkers For decades, the label "stalker' has been tattooed as a gender-specific crime, committed by men. Things have changed drastically. Twelve to 13-percent of all stalkers are female. Although less in statistical number than males, female stalkers are just as predatory and dangerous. The Big Secret of Age Think back to when you were a child. Pick a time when you were aware of the world and starting to notice things around you, perhaps 10 or 11 years old. Most of us had aging individuals in our lives: grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers. We may have loved them dearly but they were different to us: they were old. As we grew up, inevitably some of those people died. We were sad that they had gone but comforted by the knowledge that they had enjoyed a good, long, interesting life. Our unspoken assumption was that they felt old, were ready to go, were prepared for the end. A Diamond Anniversary Ring ? The Perfect Way To Seal Your Love Some time ago you both made a promise. A promise to each other. Now it's time to recognise that you both meant that promise, and that now you both still mean it. There's no better way to do that than with a gift of a diamond anniversary ring. Well maybe there is. Two diamond anniversary rings, one for him and one for her. We've all had relationships that we've looked back on and thought, "What was I thinking?'' Problem is, you weren't thinking. This is your lucky day. Put-Downs: The Whole Story What put-downs really are What to Do when Your Family Feels He is Not Good Enough for You Parents and loved ones always seem to put a damper on our love life. When you feel that you have finally found the love of your life, the problem now becomes getting your family to accept your guy and see how charming he really is. Sometimes, it can be tough to get them to see what you see in your guy. Sometimes, in their well-meaning attempt to make sure that you get the best, they encroach into your private life ? where you ought to be the sole decision maker. What Went Wrong? In my last article, I said that one of the reasons is that the 'despised' one probably isn't the one in the first place. But let's leave the 'despiser' for now and focus on the 'despisee'. What is the 'despisee' feeling? Why does he/she care so, almost to the point of ridicule? |
