STOP! Reading the Headlines and Live Your Own Life First
Imagine! 40 is old. The California State Supreme Court has said that when are you are 40, employers can discriminate against employees using this age as the excuse. I attempt to ignore all headlines in the newspapers. I try not to react to how I feel when I read them. I try I really do, but I cannot stop today. It's not new, but now, extremely blatant. I'm angry, but so what. That's my problem. Let it go and move on. I gave up that particular battle years ago. I became self-employed in various disguises. I chose to be in a business that did not discriminate because I was a woman. In my last salaried position I was paid half the salary of the former male manager. Did more and received less. I then decided only to work in a way that I was paid for my skills, not my age, weight, gender or marital status. This was my motivation. Enough was enough. Finished up, walked away and never looked back. On to better things. I started as an independent contractor, then went on to manage other independent professionals. The next step was owning my own business. I reinvented my business several times over, and in the process, myself. During all this time, I don't recall reading a newspaper or paying attention to headlines. Maybe I knew more than I thought at the time. As my wise daughter so brilliantly asks: "What does it have to do with me?" Rightly so. Stop wasting time with things that have nothing to do with you or things and people you cannot change. The solution? Ignore what doesn't serve you- in my case, news headlines- and use that time to start your own business. Small, big, it doesn't matter. Just do something. Hear the one about the Cat Massage Lady? She started a business giving cats massages. Really. Then she went on to books, tapes, CDs, videos and seminars. Now she's training others to do the same. There is Art for Infants, Scrapbooks for Anything and not one of the thousands of new businesses has anything to do with the internet. They all have to do with necessity being the mother of invention, desperation and a desire not to be discriminated when you are 40. Oh, yeah, and making money, too. Walk through your house, room by room , including the attic and the garage. What do you do well? What excites you? If it excites you, it excites someone else. How can you make it work for others? Whether you are 7, 47 or 70, you can start your own business. I saw a young girl in front of a Designer's Showcase house that was selling cake slices and cookies. I asked how she was doing and who made the sweets. She said she did, made $34.00 and was happy and proud. So was I. No one told her she couldn't. There may be no limits to her desires. By now you are saying, OK, that works for others, but not me. On the contrary. No more excuses. If you already own a business or are an independent professional, you can still do something else. Create something new or invent a niche within your existing business. If you have a 9-5 job, set aside 10 per cent of your day, that's 24 minutes, and take inventory. What are your hobbies? Look at what's missing and fill the void. But first, STOP! Stop reading headlines or doing anything that provides no benefit to your life or does not align with your own personal values. Learn that living your own life will leave you with no time to read the headlines and loads of time to be creative and really Celebrate Your Life, no matter what your age. As a life-long student of personal development, I've attended dozens of motivational seminars, listened to hundreds of tapes, and read untold books on the subject of motivation . I've presented motivational seminars. And yet there is one elemental truth that seems often overlooked. That is: no one can motivate you, because you have to do it to yourself. It's an inside job. And frankly it's less a function of "doing" than it is of discovering what your natural motivators are. So the key to getting and staying motivated is finding out what excites you. What makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning? What speaks to your heart as well as your head? How Great is the Strength of Your Belief? Be careful what you believe because that is what you will experience. Your belief system is a mechanism which is uniquely yours. It is powered by your desire and controlled by your thoughts and actions. In other words, your success is measured by the strength of your belief. Motivation: 3 Powerful Quotes from Golfer Tiger Woods I am not a golfer, unless you count an occasional game of putt-putt. I'm not even a fan of the game. But I am a fan of excellence, and so the following quotes by golfing great Tiger Woods recently caught my attention: Get Out of Your Comfort Zone - Before Its Too Late Think about what you're doing each day and ask yourself - "Is what I'm doing now getting me to where I want to get to?" If the answer is "No" then do something different. Get out of your comfort zone and change your habits. Dont Get Hysterical About The Historical The tension was palpable in the room as I began the first marital counseling session ever for the couple who had passed their 50th anniversary several years before. After a few pleasantries designed to put them more at ease, I invited, "Tell me about what brought you here." Passion and Purpose Who are we, standing here on this planet, looking for a place to be? Are we the "forgotten ones" from a time gone by, a piece of pre-history perhaps, that lets itself unfold through the pages of time? Personal Motivation: Without Struggle There Is No Progress As each day ends and another begins, the words of Frederick Douglas ask us as individuals to recognize the relationships between life's daily struggles. Thinking for Success - The Same Method Does Not Work For Everyone I am always concerned that there are so many books available on the subject of being successful, but unfortunately many of these books are read and then discarded. Do We Have Free Will? It is being suggested here that we have only one real choice in life: Say It Aint So For years, many of us heard the phrase "Knowledge is Power." We actively devoured books upon books to advance our knowledge in the hopes of gaining power. Some of us even adopted the attitude that I can learn anything from a book. Yes, knowledge is powerful, but knowledge alone will not advance you to that next level of success, whatever it is. A Burning Desire "Mommy, he's doing it again." I yelled as I came running into the kitchen where I knew I would find Mother. I was so angry-no MAD-that I was breathing like a wild animal. "Shawn is taking my toys apart, again. I hate him. I hate him." 4 Powerful Ways To Fire Up Your Motivation It's so difficult to go on when everything seems to fail, isn't it? Are there times in your life when you really want to callit "quits" because you just can't see any good results from allthe hard work you've done? Why Do 9 Out of 10 People Never Live Their Dreams? When we were kids we all had dreams. There were no boundaries to our imagination and anything was possible. Do you remember your dreams? What happened to your dreams? Did life get into its way? Are we all to busy to use our imagination? How to Stay Motivated Day In and Day Out Staying motivated requires a daily ritual. My Grandmother Never Had a Degree There were four generations sitting at the kitchen table, smacking on Mommy's delicious meal-somehow we never made it to the dining room. I smiled to myself when I thought of how fabulous this truly was--sitting here, next to my grandmother, my mother, my father, my sister, my children and my niece-celebrating Mother's Day. Are You an Optimist or a Pessimist? I have been giving some thought lately to optimism and pessimism. Basically, these are attitudes. Attitudes that shape and formulate our entire existence. I mean, have you ever met a happy pessimist? Of course not. Celebrating the Couch Potato Ah, the couch potato, that icon of American pop culture values. Isn't that the life? Why would anyone want to exert extra energy to be productive when you can simply plop down on the couch in front of the telly and enjoy all that delicious snack food and a cool one. Why worry about a yard that needs mowing, a sink full of dishes or that overflowing garbage can. They will all be there tomorrow or even next week - you can take care of them then, or not. Mastering Emotions: Taking Your Life To The Next Level Hello, Nothing To Lose I stormed out of the office and headed for the patio area in front of my office building. It was October 2003, and everybody knew what happened. Ever since our division consolidated in February 2002, there had been more "closed door" conversations than ever, and when they involved me, I usually came out angry. This time I was madder than ever. I was sick of the office politics, sick of the cliques, sick of people sneaking around the rules ? and you can only take all of that being sick so long before you explode. After complaining to my supervisor for the umpteenth time about the state of affairs, we both cracked. I told her I was disappointed at the lack of morals and integrity, and she told me that I needed to just shut up and get professional help for depression if that's what it took to quit complaining. Here is the ironic part: I have a degree in psychology. |
