Fear Emotions - Positive or Negative?
What is fear's purpose? How do you handle it? While I am working in my pest control business, I meet people on an almost daily basis who are influenced by negative fear thoughts regarding pests invading their premises. A good size spider, rat, or unexpected insect can set someone off pretty quickly, and literally immobilize them. It consumes their thoughts to the point where they have trouble thinking about anything else. Thinking about why people do this, makes me wonder about the purpose of Fear emotions. I really started wondering as to how many people really do allow Fear, anxiety, worry, etc. to freeze them into inaction in everyday life. They achieve a very negative result, one which I have to think, is not what they really want. Fear - What is it's purpose? Do you let fear immobilize you or do you act in spite of it, safely, consciously aware of why it is there? Personally, I look upon fear as a positive emotion. I know that uncontrolled this emotion can breed many negative results. But when controlled, this emotion can spur you into action like no other I know of. And I think that this is truly the reason for fear. Think of it as your best friend, preparing you for progress. Make friends with the unknown. We should acknowledge the fear we are experiencing. Allow that it is a positive thing within us that warns us of some impending danger or harm. And then, analyze it to see if it is real or imagined, justified or not. When we recognize it's positive intent, it is no longer something to immobilize us, but quite the reverse, we can jump into action to remedy 'why' we are fearful. I think that it is the inaction bred by over-analyzing, by focusing on the fear, actually dwelling on it, imagining the 'what ifs', that keeps us from taking the actions necessary to move though it. We need to process it, not dwell in it. I'm sure everyone has heard the old expression, 'A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave person, only one.' We do not want to hold the FEAR thought. That is not what it is there for. As long as we focus on the positive intent a fearful state represents, rather on the fear itself, we can question ourselves as to what this fear is trying to tell us to do, and take the necessary actions to protect ourselves or blast us though this perceived barrier. All we have to know is, `What is really going on here?' What do I need to do in order for me to feel better about moving forward? Or do I really need to back off from this course? Do I need to take another smaller action (baby step) or do I just need to change my perception about what is going on here? Then, move forward in some direction no matter how small a step it seems. Usually just taking action and the momentum you gain and feel, will free you from the fearful, concerned, worried feeling you had. Do you have something bothering you, or something you have been putting off, or dreading? Something you know you must do, but just haven't been able to face up to the task? Break it down until there is something you can move forward with. Take it in baby steps, take action. Do it and then celebrate the victory! Feel your confidence grow! Your mind can only hold one thought at a time. Make it an action thought that empowers you. This is only one person's opinion, but I feel it is better to believe in something beneficial that I can take control of, rather than be at it's mercy!. Training Your Mind to Help You Our friend, singer and songwriter Chuck Pyle, likes to say, "The mind is like a bad neighborhood-you should never go there by yourself." If you're mind hasn't been trained to help you, via methods like meditation, shamanism or NLP, it might really be a bad neighborhood. Our minds constantly absorb thoughts, behaviors, and responses from our environment. These various thought patterns and responses may or may not be in alignment with our goals. So, unless we actively train our minds to be responsive to our needs, we may be in for a wild chariot ride (and 6 out of control horses)! What Motivates You? As a life-long student of personal development, I've attended dozens of motivational seminars, listened to hundreds of tapes, and read untold books on the subject of motivation . I've presented motivational seminars. And yet there is one elemental truth that seems often overlooked. That is: no one can motivate you, because you have to do it to yourself. It's an inside job. And frankly it's less a function of "doing" than it is of discovering what your natural motivators are. So the key to getting and staying motivated is finding out what excites you. Motivation By Your Family And Cornermen The motivation for good or bad which we get from our families is huge. They can either destroy our dreams or help us create them. Most of the boxers in the Contender series are strongly supported by their families. The organisers recognise this fact by allowing families to live close to the Contender Gymnasium. Our Future I'm back from Hawaii; it was ten days of physical and emotional mastery. We went from learning from twenty of the planets best speakers in their field, to being pushed physically with a fifty foot pole climb, and then, flying fifteen feet like a free bald eagle to a hanging trapeze. These were some of the most invigorating experiences of my life. Are Millionaires and PhDs Really Smarter? The Answer May Surprise You! I've had a vast array of job experiences. While in high school, I worked as maid for a local motel. While attending college, I worked as an office worker in the Sociology Department and Museum of Fine Arts. After college, I was a social worker for six years. A Surfing Lesson I've never surfed in my life. Sometimes people tell me I look like a surfer, but never once have I been on a board out in the water. It fascinates me though. It was about a year ago that I was standing at the water's edge with a good friend. She was a surfer who had competed professionally and had hosted a surfing show on TV. We were watching surfers and I was asking questions about waves, boards, techniques, etc. Be Action-Oriented Are you a melancholic online business owner by nature? I have something to tell you. How To Avoid Being Labelled As Average When your life is over how will you be graded? Will you get an A or a B or will you get a C Average? Will your time on this earth be rated as average? None of us want to be average. We all want to be successful. We all, deep down, have the desire to achieve something in our lives. So why oh why are you satisfied with being Ms or Mr average? What is it that makes you content being average? Motivation - The Power of Drive My experience tells me there are three stages people go through on their way to having the drive necessary to meet their goals: Growing Out of Your Comfort Zone It has been said that "if you are not growing, you're dying." As human beings, we are on a constant journey called life. Rick Warren has been quite successful at stimulating thought and faith in his fine book, A Purpose Driven Life, suggesting that we are all here on Earth for a reason. I would like to propose that the concept of success is purpose-driven too. Earl Nightingale referred to success as the "continuing pursuit of a worthy ideal" and spoke of it often. I submit then, that success is not a destination, but a purposeful journey. A Reality Practice Suggested practice to gain freedom from self-limitation. Finding the Easy Way For the last hour I have been sweating over what I will write about in "Roy Bits." I have been laying in bed trying to conjure up something in my head. After I made my morning pilgrimage to the washroom, I sat down half asleep in front of the computer slumped over my desk with my head resting on folded arms and eyes closed trying to imagine what I would write about. |
